THE RIGHT -poetry by guest author Candace Meredith

There is not always a limelight where

He may rise to glory, but she can see

Everything has become like the nighttime stars

Regardless of his attempts that were futile

In the end, his body hurt

Glory, the heartiness of a price tag

Has some elements of sacrifice

To become a father, he had to also learn

The fine line between greatness and giving a little

Opposite his affection may be his memories

Caring never left his bones

He feels through the dark with cracked hands

Often returning late, the whistle still blows

Out of affection for duty over glory

She knew he’d win

Every chance he had to come home

Vivaciously he tended the machines

Inside, he nursed his labor

Cautiously to teach his daughter

To father was his greatest gift, and to

Otherwise put the food in their empty stomachs

Ravished of the bread

Yielding to the time clock,

Finding in the stars his daughter’s eyes upon him in the moments he just could not be near
