Serving at the Colored Orphan Asylum for twenty years
And publishing medical intellect,
An abolitionist fighting despite his fears,
James Smith, the first black doctor, gained respect.
Opening a pharmacy, the first African American in the nation,
Changing the medical knowledge about race,
Laying a vital anti-slavery station,
James Smith promoted change with grace.
Working with the underground railroad,
While providing hope to a countless population,
Much to this great man is owed,
James Smith a man for celebration!
